Things to Avoid for Aquarium Cleaning
Aquarium cleaning is not just about getting rid of dirt. When cleaning up, you should think about the balance in the ecosystem inside the fish tank. There are cleaning agents that may be effective elsewhere but can only be harmful in the aquarium environment. Here are some things that you should not include in your aquarium cleaning technique:
Do not use soap for algae-filled decor and gravel.
If you find your artificial plants and pebbles coated with algae, use algae scraper to remove the scum. Do not use soap or any other type of detergent. While detergents can clean your decor well, they may leave some residue, which are lethal to fish. It can be quite difficult to completely rinse them out.
Do not remove everything from the aquarium.
While you may be bent on removing every ounce of dirt or bacteria, remember that there are beneficial bacteria that help convert toxic wastes and biochemicals into less harmful properties. When you remove everything for cleanup, you may stress or kill these bacteria used in the biological filtration system.
